George Herbert Obituary

George Walter Herbert, age 93, of Camden, NY died on Monday at the New York State Veteran’s Home of Oxford, NY. He was born on February 5,1925 in Hastings, NY, a son of the late Louis and Mary Herbert. He spent most of his childhood living in West Monroe, NY with his parents and 19 siblings. 

Mr. Herbert enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1942 and is a WWII veteran.  He spent most of his service aboard the USS Lexington, in the South Pacific.  On November 30, 1947 he married Vivian Peck from Camden, NY.  They raised their family in Cicero, NY.  Mr. Herbert was a builder and built many homes in the Cicero area.  He was also employed at Solvay Process and Syracuse China.  In the early 1960’s he worked on the construction of Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse, NY and went on to become a supervisor in the Physical Plant at the hospital.  He retired from there in 1983.  In 1988 George and Vivian moved to Camden, NY. 

He was a member of the VFW and American Legion in Camden, NY.  Mr. Herbert enjoyed spending time with his family, traveling, hunting, and fishing. 

He was predeceased by his wife, Vivian, who died in 2008 and daughter, Cindy, who died in 1987; brothers, Stephen K, William, Francis, Louis T., Charles, Joseph, Henry, Victor, John, Donald, and Steven; and sisters, Carolyn Kranjec, Betty Zaluski, and Margaret Connors. 

He is survived by his children; Linda (Barry) Shumaker of York, PA, Melissa (Robert) Hill of Hastings, NY and Garry (Annette) Herbert of McGraw, NY, eleven grandchildren and ten great grandchildren; sisters, Ann Banville of Syracuse, Wilma Cleveland of Arlington, Texas and Mary (Louis) Gass of West Monroe, NY; and brothers, Mike (Louise) Herbert of West Monroe, NY, and Arnold (Beverly) Herbert of Parish, NY. 

The family wishes to thank the New York State Veteran’s Home of Oxford, NY for their dedication to Mr. Herbert’s care during his stay there. His children were comforted by the staff’s attention to his needs and confident that they made his last few years easier.  

Calling hours will be Friday, 4 – 7 PM, at Watson Funeral Home, 631 S. Main St., Central Square, NY. A Funeral Mass will be held Saturday, 10 AM, at St. John’s, Camden, NY. A burial will take place in the spring at Maple Flats Cemetery, Cleveland, NY.
