Roland Whigham Obituary

To Our Friends and Family,

It is with a heavy heart that our Roland E. Whigham passed away peacefully at Crouse hospital on Sunday January 28th 2024. Roland was born on January 3rd, 1927 in Millry, Alabama. He is pre deceased by his loving wife Frances Holmes and two sons Ronnie and Robert Whigham, as well as his mother and father, Vella and Eugene D Whigham.

Roland was the 2nd born of 14 children. He is survived by his sisters, Lucille Whigham Waite, Carolyn Chapman, Sandra (Otis) Strickland, Barbara Ann Becton and his brother Wyman (Diane) Whigham. He leaves behind many nieces and nephews.

Roland joined the Army in 1944 and served in Japan with his brother Eugene. Roland moved to New York in the 1950’s with his family where he worked in construction and was a member of the Operating Engineers, local 158, District 545. He was instrumental in the building of Route 81 and the NYS Thruway. He was in the construction business for over 60 years. He was very proud of his work and liked to talk about it with everyone.

Roland was a member of the VFW in Constantia, New York and post 915 of the American Legion for many years. He wintered at his home in Arizona for the past 20 + years. He enjoyed life to the fullest and loved all of his friends and family. His happiest times were when he took his loved ones to dinner to share a meal and stories. He enjoyed, and took great pleasure in, caring for his homes and the landscaping at both properties. He was well known for his pride in his blueberry bushes which he so lovingly tended at his home in Central Square. Roland was a strong man who worked tirelessly. His work day started at sunrise and ended at sunset even after his retirement.

Roland will be remembered for his generosity and for lending a helping hand to those in need. He had a deep faith that carried him through life and especially the last few months. He leaves a large hole in all of us who had the privilege of knowing him and being a part of his life.

Per Roland’s wishes, there will be a graveside service with military honors in the spring. Date to be determined. Donations may be sent to the SPCA/Humane Society of CNY, The Wounded Warrior Project or the VA Hospital in Syracuse, NY.
